KTR inaugurates Hyderabad’s first Skywalk at Uppal, Making Pedestrian Travel Safer and More Convenient
HYDERABAD: The skywalk at Uppal X Roads, measuring 660 meters in length, was inaugurated by KT Rama Rao, the Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD). This eagerly anticipated skywalk aims to alleviate congestion and facilitate pedestrian movement at one of the city’s busiest intersections. It will seamlessly connect the Metro Station and nearby bus stops, located at each arm of the junction.
The primary objective of this project is to enhance pedestrian mobility at the intersection while minimizing conflicts with vehicular traffic. This facility will significantly improve last-mile and first-mile connectivity for the surrounding communities, according to officials. As the first-of-its-kind project in the state, the skywalk was constructed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.
On a daily basis, more than 430 bus services from Warangal transport over 30,000 passengers, while the Uppal Metro Station serves approximately 25,000 commuters, connecting major areas such as Secunderabad, Begumpet, Jubilee Hills, and Hitec City. Given the rapid growth of the Uppal area in recent years, there is a pressing need to develop world-class infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of commuters, officials added.
The skywalk ensures smooth vehicular flow, designated bus stops, and safe pedestrian access. It directly links both sides of the Uppal Metro Station at the concourse level, providing a secure passage for commuters from the opposite side of the street. Unlike conventional foot-over bridges (FoBs) found in the city, this skywalk will serve as a vibrant public space adorned with greenery and resting pods, enhancing the pedestrian experience both on the ground and in the air at the junction.
Featuring six hop-on stations with eight lifts, six staircases, and four escalators, these stations are strategically located near the Metro station towards Nagole Road, towards Ramanthapur Road (KV corner), within the GHMC Theme Park, near the Warangal bus stop (near GHMC Office), adjacent to the Uppal Police station/MRO Office, and opposite the Uppal electrical substation.
